Frequently Asked Questions About Apple and Pear Pork Rib Soup

Is the apple and pear soup a remedy for cough?

The apple and pear soup is a traditional Chinese home remedy for cough and sore throat for decades. If you are feeling a little under the weather, Asian pears are said to reduce phlegm, moisten your throat, while increasing the ‘yin’, which is the ‘cooling energy’ in your body.

Do Asian pears have vitamin C?

Yes, in fact, Asian pears are infused with a high concentration of antioxidants, including vitamin C. Because of that, Asian pears are a nutritious source of vitamin C to help you boost your immune system and facilitate the growth and repair of bodily tissues. Beyond that, they also provide a substantial amount of potassium, vitamin K, copper, and other nutrients for your daily nutritional needs.

Can I substitute pork ribs with other parts of the pork?

Due to the savoriness, tenderness, and versatility, the pork rib is one of the most common parts used in simmered soups across Chinese households. However, you can also choose to substitute the ribs with pork knuckles or trotter if you are looking to achieve a milkier broth. Alternatively, lean meat can also be used as a substitute to accomplish a clearer broth.

Simmering Chinese Apple and Pear Pork Rib Soup: Tips and Tricks

  1. Peel the skin of the pears and apples if they are too tough for your liking: Depending on your personal preference, you can choose to peel off the skin of the pears and apples. Fret not, as this would only change the texture of the ingredients, but not the sweet and refreshing flavor of them.

  2. Cut your pears into large chunks: If you want to retain the juiciness and flavor of the Chinese pears, it is recommended to cut them into large slices so that you can savor them even after boiling for hours. Large chunk pears give your soup a whole lot more flavor and texture as you devour them.

  3. You can choose to soak the white fungus overnight: If you have a little more time on hand to make advanced preparation, you can choose to soak and hydrate your white fungus overnight, in order to achieve a much softer, gelatinous texture when cooked.

  4. Watch the ‘boil-o-clock’: When simmering, you want to monitor your soup closely and ensure that you do not overboil them. When overboiled, the apples and pears within your mix will become way too soft and ‘flimsy’, causing them to disintegrate when you scoop for some.
