Overview

Located on the island of Borneo in the central region of Sarawak in Malaysia, Bintulu sits between Kuching and Kota Kinabalu and serves as a base from which to explore Borneo’s beautiful national parks. Bintulu might not be the first place that comes to mind when planning a holiday, but with ancient cave systems, jungle trails and beaches just a hop away, this humble coastal town is steadily becoming an established destination.

Eat

Rahmat Coffee House

Kampung Assyakirin, 97000 Bintulu, Sarawak, Malaysia

Monday to Sunday | 5.30pm to 11pm

Rahmat Coffee House is great for good old Malaysian grub. This no-frills establishment offers a delicious array of food and one dish that really stands out – Nasi Kerabu.

It’s blue! The rice is blue! Prepared with a range of local herbs, the rice gets its colour from the petals of butterfly pea flowers, or bunga telang as they are known in Malay. Best eaten with a selection of sides, we complemented our blue herb rice with fried chicken, cabbage, toasted grated coconut, salted egg and a trio of sauces.

Complete your colorful meal with a glass of Teh Tarik Pandan but don’t be put off by its green colour. The pandan adds a subtle, refreshing twist to the milk tea that will get you hooked.

Restoran Seribu Bintang

Kampung Baru 97000 Bintulu Sarawak, Malaysia

Monday to Sunday | 5PM to 1AM

Eat like a local and head down to Restoran Seribu Bintang. A popular local haunt, this restaurant offers a cozy atmosphere for a casual dinner with your friends and loved ones. You can choose to enjoy your food in the main seating area indoors or in one of the many sheltered wooden huts that are available on their grounds.

They serve a wide variety of Asian cuisines – Malay, Indonesian, Chinese and Indian – so you’ll be spoiled for choice! If you ever need help deciding what to order, ask the staff for their house specialties and they’re happy to help.

One of our favorites is their Ikan Bakar. Fresh fish cooked to perfection over a banana leaf, it’s satisfyingly moist and the natural flavors really come through. The dish wouldn’t be complete without lime and sambal (local chili sauce), which give the fish an extra burst of flavor. We cannot rave about the sambal enough! A 10-year-old secret family recipe, the sambal is perfectly balanced – spicy, yet without overpowering the natural sweetness of the fish.

Aside from the fish, you can’t go wrong with any of the traditional dishes cooked with their signature sambal, so try them out.

Assyakirin Kitchen

No. 112/Lot 3398, Ground Floor, Parkcity Commerce Square, Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi, 97000 Bintulu

Monday to Sunday | 7AM to 9PM

You can’t leave Bintulu without trying one of Sarawak’s classic dishes – Kolo Mee. Lightly tossed springy noodles topped with a generous serving of your meat of choice, it’s commonly served with soup and soy sauce to enhance its flavors. This signature Sarawak dish is so popular among the locals that it’s eaten at any time of day – breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper. You can have it any time you want.

At Assyakirin Kitchen, we had our Kolo Mee with shredded chicken and beef slices. The noodles have their signature springy texture and the accompanying soup has a delicious beef-based flavor that we absolutely love. The whole dish comes together with a topping of spring onions and fried onions which adds a satisfying crunch. It’s yummy and super comforting and we can see why the locals are proud to call this dish their own.
