Review: Classic Soybean Dessert Gets Makeover at Soylab Malaysia

At Soylab Malaysia, enjoy trendy cafe favourites inspired by the classic Chinese dessert of Tau Fu Fah or soy pudding.

How does one take the seemingly simple Chinese dessert of dou hua, tau huay or tau fu fah (depending  on  your dialect) to true greatness? Soylab Malaysia appears to have found the winning  formula in a series of on-trend cafe desserts  inspired by the humble and historical (we’re talking about the Han Dynasty from 206BC-220AD) soy pudding. Bonus: Its core ingredient of Canadian Non-GMO soybeans allows for dairy-free menu.

A worthy introduction is the Soy Shaved Ice (RM14.00), the cafe’s take on the Korean shaved ice, patbingsoo.  Frozen  homemade  sweetened  soy  milk  is  shaved  into  a  flaky  heap  and layered with tapioca pearls, adzuki red beans, grass jelly and crushed peanuts, before it’s served with an eye-catching cloud of dry ice for the ‘gram. You’d be instantly impressed by the strong aroma of soybeans -a sign of its premium quality -and even more so by its delicate texture. Many will agree that this, along with the Soydae (soy soft serve) (RM7.50), is a must after a day of sightseeing in the unforgiving heat.

Traditionalist can go for the “Shuai” Beancurd (RM9.50), their classic soy pudding that comes with your choice of three toppings, but it’d be a waste not to give their Soyffle Pancakes a try.

Their rendition of Japan’s favourite souffle pancakes with soy milk pushes the envelope with the introduction of local flavours, like the Apam Balik (RM20.50) (otherwise known as turnover pancake, murtabak manis or man jian guo). Expect a spectacular presentation with dairy-free corn and coconut gelato, coconut soy cream, coconut flakes and crushed peanuts lai out alongside two pillowy-soft cakes. There is a waiting period of 30 minutes, giving you ample time to check out the rest of its menu.

But if time is not on your side, there’s always  the option of packing away the range of homemade soymilk (from RM5.00 to RM12.00). The highlight is the brown sugar milk-inspired Bean Looking  for  series. Most notable is the Bean Looking For Him (RM10.00  for  small; RM12.00 for large) where organic Non-GMO black soybean milk are served with homemade brown sugar syrup and chewy tapioca pearls. Many would find that the nuttier black soybeans make for a better match with the rich molasses-like syrup and, if you’re feeling fancy, the sweet yet savoury topping of Homemade Cheese Crème Brûlée (additional RM2.00).

Those looking for a healthier alternative, on the other hand, can go for the Yam or Pumpkin Soymilk (RM8.00 for small; RM10.00 for large), where fresh yam and pumpkin are steamed, blended  and  mixed  into  their  signature  soymilk.  Tip:  Bring  your  own  bottles  for  10%  off beverages.
