Review: Top 5 Eats at Amazing Hokkaido

Among the many Japanese eating spots in Singapore, Amazing Hokkaido at lively Robertson Quay stands out with its attention to quality

The interior of the 100-seater, with colourful fabric and posters of Hokkaido all around, is reminiscent of a bustling izakaya in Japan. This bright addition to Robertson Quay has its fresh produce flown in daily from its namesake, Hokkaido; a region well-known for its fresh seafood. Here, you will experience the charm of authentic Izakaya culture and a plethora of Japanese offerings, all in one dining enclave.

Here are our top 5 recommendations:

1. The Melty 7 Kinds of Tsukune

If you love yakitori, you are going to enjoy the tsukune. Chicken meatballs grilled to perfection, that’s tsukune for you. Hokkaido being the birthplace of yakitori (bet you didn’t know that!), Amazing Hokkaido had to pay homage to this crowd favourite with their own version. The Melty 7 Kinds of Tsukune is a range of chicken meatball skewers, served with a variety of toppings such as mentai mayo, seaweed and wasabi, for that extra kick. The chicken meat is ground in-house, which is why the meatballs turn out soft, juicy, and every bite is delectable. These meatballs are well balanced with saltiness from the chicken and the sweetness of the sauce. Needless to say, you won’t be disappointed.  The variation of flavours including teriyaki allows you to enjoy a variety of tsukune but there’s nothing wrong with the original, which is delicious on its own.

While the meatballs take centre-stage, do try their other yakitori. Yakitori is usually chicken skewers but here, it’s with a twist; Muroran Yakitori is a grilled pork and onion skewer that won’t disappoint. For the adventurous, try the Bibai Yakitori, it features chicken breast, gizzard, liver, and heart ensuring no part of the chicken goes to waste! Skewered Jingisukan which is lamb shoulder is another stand out with the right amount of meat and fat hit with the accent of cumin; one stick is simply not enough.

2. Hokkaido Wagyu Steak

Get set for a fiery performance when the Hokkaido Wagyu Steak arrives to the table. The steak is set ablaze on a lava stone plate and this is where the wagyu gets the hint of smokiness and caramelisation. If you’d like your steak well done, keep it on the stone for a longer time but we took ours off the stone fairly quickly for a medium rare version. An assortment of condiments such as yuzu kosho (yuzu chilli paste), sea salt, wasabi and steak sauce will be served alongside for added flavour in every bite. The wagyu is melt-in-your-mouth and pairing it with the black pepper steak sauce (we would bring home a bottle of this if we could) is a mouthful of heaven.

3. Assorted Hokkaido Fresh Sashimi

Seafood lovers are in for an ocean feast, as they eat their way up the Assorted Hokkaido Fresh Sashimi. Served up on a structure shaped like a winding staircase, the platter includes sashimi favourites such as fatty tuna, scallop, sweet shrimp and sea urchin. Fresh is the keyword here, with the seafood flown in daily from Hokkaido, this is a real treat. The star of the platter is the fatty tuna and as cliché as this sounds, it’s just melt in your mouth with all that omega goodness. The scallop is soft and hint of sweetness is great with a concoction of wasabi & soya sauce. The sweet shrimp is true to its name, sweet goodness all the way from head to tail. Oysters are plump, creamy, sweet, salty and what’s unique, instead of your usual lemon wedge, they are paired with a gel-like dollop of soya sauce and seaweed flavours. Everything on this platter screams amazing and is a must have.

4. Sasaki’s Farm Organic Vege Salad

Don’t scroll past this yet…this has to be one of the freshest salads ever, and rightfully so with the vegetables flown in daily too. Fresh organic vegetables full of natural flavours, specially imported from Sasaki Farm, this salad is a go-to every time you need a dash of healthy. Paired with the pronounced and bold miso and mentai dipping sauces, these are possibly the best vegetables you’ll ever have. It’s crunchy, it’s fresh and just makes healthy eating ever so inviting.

If you still need carbs with your side of vegetables, the Hokkaido Fried Potato with Seaweed & Mentaiko Mayonnaise will definitely hit that spot.

5. Bursting Salmon Roe Rice Bowl

Ikura fans, this dish has your name on it. The signature dish of Bursting Salmon Roe Rice Bowl is presented with an element of fun at the table. It’s quite an experiential dish where servers chant enthusiastically to live taiko beats, as they heap spoonful after spoonful of umami-laden ikura upon your rice bowl!  Mix in the wasabi and seaweed, and every mouthful becomes an elevated experience with the symphony of ikura bursting in your mouth. The rice is compact and generous, paired together with the abundance of ikura, this dish is great to share around the table.
